Spacescan: an interactive interface for organizing, navigating content with gestures in the actual space.
Client & Location: several
Year: 2009-ongoing

Concept
Pictures and animations are projected to the handheld and free-to-move board with their topics depending on the spatial movement and location of the visitor. Turning and moving the board in various directions displays diverse content for the watcher.

The original concept came from reversing a slide projection by letting people hold the projection surface. Later on we added some interactivity with the following concepts and digital tools.

Realization
The technical background running the installation is the result of the creators’ own software and hardware development. In the first interactive version, IR LEDs integrated in the board are scanned by a real-time application that transforms the projected environment into a virtual space full of visual information. The zones generated can be considered to be a kind of experimental interface: photos of designs, renders and abstract animations can be “scanned” in space. Later on we switched to light reflective textiles to avoid LED battery problems.
